The campus of CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum covers the total area of 257 Acre which is rich in bio-diversity having about 62 species of birds identified earlier this year by Doon Nature Walks, 80-plus butterfly species identified during the World Environment Day walk in 2017, varieties of wild animals and more than 300 species of the trees (fruit and non-fruit). This indicated the ability of the institute’s community to live in harmony with nature. In order to maintain this harmony, the institute had initiated a movement towards creating a waste-free eco-campus through the proper management/ utilisation/ recycling of waste in a sustainable manner, societal practices and campus experience. The long-term objective of the project is to use the campus waste as a source of energy/ valuable feedstock for the generation of fuel that can be utilised for the betterment of the campus life as well to create a self-sustainable system. In this context, the institute is committed to utilizing the different kinds of waste as feedstock by utilising in-house developed technologies for the creation of the value from the waste –
- Kitchen/ bio-degradable waste will be utilized for biogas generation for supplying as a fuel in the in-house canteen of the institute.
- Plastic waste generated in the campus is being converted into diesel fuel by waste plastic technology developed by the institute.
- Forest residue/ woody biomass is being utilised for the pyrolysis to get bio-oil that can be used for the production of electricity.
- Woody biomass/ pine cones will be utilized for the production of bio-oil and carbon materials.
