Bharat Stage VI (BS-IV) emissions standards would be implemented from April 2020. This requires OEMs to equip their diesel engines with costly after-treatment, EGR systems, and higher rail pressure fuel systems. It is estimated that BS-VI engines would be 15 to 20% more expensive than BS-IV engines, while also suffering from 2 to 3 % lower fuel economy due to the incorporation of exhaust after treatment. Therefore in this area, the primary focus of research is on the development of cost-effective solutions for automotive exhaust after treatment. Research is being carried out to develop non-noble metal-based catalytic systems. Some key research activities in the area include:
- Development of catalysts for direct decomposition of NO
- Fuel Bourne Catalyst for PM reduction from diesel pump sets
- No noble metal-based DOC development
- Retro fitment of Exhaust after-treatment devices on Diesel Gen-sets
