CSIR-IIP Lube, Wax, Bitumen, Deasphalting and Carbon Material Group has rich experience of more than 5 Decades Working on Lube & Wax Processing and value addition to heavy end of Crude Petroleum. Broad Area of activities of the Group includes Lube Base Oil Processing; Re-refining of Used Lubricating Oil; Solvent Dewaxing/Deoiling; Solvent Deasphalting and Advance Carbon Materials.
Group pursues the following R&D activities

- Technical services/conceptualization of lube block processes
- Process development & process Upgradation studies
- Process feasibility, process optimization studies
- Generation of process design /scale up data
- Know how for grass-root units/revamps of process units
- Re-refining of used oil /allied technological studies
- Stock loss and VOC Emission studies in Retailing of Petroleum Products
CSIR-IIP Bitumen Lab works in R & D in the area of Development of conventional and modified bitumens since last 30 years. CSIR-IIP has developed various bitumens like conventional bitumens and polymer modified bitumens from available indigenous petroleum residues obtained from different refineries. CSIR-IIP has state-of-the-art physicochemical characterization facilities for all grades of bitumens such as penetration, Softening point, ductility, density, kinematic and absolute viscosity, solubility, the flash point for age and un-aged bituminous binder. In addition to this CSIR-IIP has an advanced rheometer (AR1500 eX) for rheological analysis of bituminous binder and advanced Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT) unit to characterize the ageing characteristics of bituminous binder. IIP has successfully completed several projects on bitumens, sponsored by different funding agencies like CHT – New Delhi, PII – Mumbai, BPCL R&D, CPCL Chennai and Sohar Refinery (OMAN) etc.
CSIR-IIP has expertise and facilities for making various on-grade bitumens as per BIS / IRC/ SHRP specifications.
